KTN's Rail & sensing communities get-together: Intelligent Sensing Programme 44 - Health, Monitoring and Predictive Maintenance in Rail Infrastructure

The next meeting of KTN’s Intelligent Sensing Programme, a regular get-together for KTN’s sensors community, will feature new technologies and developments in condition monitoring of rail infrastructure.

Intelligent Sensing Programme 44: Health, Monitoring and Predictive Maintenance in Rail Infrastructure at the National Railway Museum in York on 5 July promises to also provide useful networking opportunities, and, according to the event organiser Matt Butchers, will be a particularly timely cross-sector meeting of minds considering “the vast challenges in maintenance for the rail industry”.

Dr. Matt Butchers, is KTN’s Knowledge Transfer Manager for Sensors, Instrumentation, and Industrial Mathematics reports that the 44th edition of the biannual Intelligent Sensing Programme will explore topics including: Remote Sensing, Embedded Sensing, Diagnostics, and Big Data.

The event is expected to bring together interests covering a broad spectrum of technologies, to discuss advances in sensing technologies; plus, as at previous editions, there’ll be a parallel display of relevant technologies. 

Specific topics to be explored cover Remote Sensing, Embedded Sensing, Diagnostics, Big Data, and so far confirmed are presenters include from The Knowledge Transfer Network, HS2 Ltd., Conekt, Network Rail, Innovate UK, Balfour Beatty Rail and University of Cranfield.

Smart maintenance for infrastructure - vital for safety and competitive advantage

Looking ahead to the 5 July Intelligent Sensing Event, Matt said, “Prognostics, Health Monitoring and Predictive Maintenance – smart maintenance - for infrastructure are vital not only in safety critical applications, but for many other sectors to give competitive advantage.”

“Ultimately, the objective of ISP 44 is to provide timely actionable information to enable intelligent decisions – for improved performance, safety, reliability, and maintainability. Aiming where possible for a move away from interval based maintenance to condition based maintenance.”

“Additionally, unnecessary, intrusive maintenance on infrastructure is a risky business. The removal of devices and testing can cause unintentional damage to equipment and infrastructure – and in hard to reach land difficult locations, can be a risk to human life.” 

And with recent dedication to rail infrastructure of investments by the UK Government, this topic is increasingly pressing for the rail industry.

“With infrastructure elements consisting of bridges, embankments, fences, drainage, the challenges are vast.”, added Matt.
