Times they are a-changing

The last few years have seen the rail sector embrace change and innovation, recognising that new solutions can be found through working with people and businesses from outside the existing supply chain and opening up the innovation landscape to everyone - even end users! Building on the Rail Technical Strategy, initiatives like the Unlocking Innovation Scheme and the competitions being run by the Enabling Innovation Team, it is clear that the rail industry is focusing on developing a more open culture in which innovation can flourish.

A new, non-sector-specific Innovation Charter, developed by the rail industry for use anywhere, is a great example of how times are changing - and for the better!

Download the innovation charter now, and use it in your next industry collaboration.

Rail Innovation Schemes you can get involved with

Below are a few of the schemes that the rail industry has initiated to encourage innovation in the sector.  Please contact them directly if you are interested.

1. Network Rail's Innovation and Suggestions Scheme

Network Rail encourages you to view their challenge areas and submit ideas for improving their service through their Innovation Portal.  Already, suggestions through this are expected to save Network Rail over £40million by 2014!

2. Unlocking Innovation in Rail

RIA's ‘Unlocking Innovation Scheme' seeks to make a difference – by helping supply chain companies in the UK to overcome the obstacles to innovation in the rail sector.  The scheme seeks to improve the capability of the railway supply chain to innovate with new technology, processes and business models and, in so doing, offer benefit to Britain's railways and grow our exports.

Find out more by joining and browsing the group's pages or by contacting RIA directly.

3. Enabling Innovation in Rail

EIT logo

The Enabling Innovation team is a dedicated cross-industry team designed to accelerate the uptake of innovation across the rail industry.  They seek to match long term business challenges to innovative solutions and provide support and funding, helping innovators to navigate the complex rail industry landscape.  Their area of focus is in supporting practical demonstrator projects across technology, business and supply chain innovation.  They help drive new ideas from concept through to implementation on the railway.

For more info on the competitions that EIT runs, or any other questions you may have about the initiative, please get in touch with the team by tweeting @EITRail, emailing RCM@futurerailway.org or view the website for more info.

4. TfL's Innovation Portal

Transport for London's Technology Innovation Portal intends to break down barriers by focusing thoughts and inspirations on the technological solutions to the challenges that we face and help get good ideas directly in front of their domain experts and accountable managers.
