Invest in Innovative Refurb

This £6M programme, funded by the Department for Energy and Climate Change (DECC), will introduce new energy efficient technologies and processes to the refurbishment of non domestic buildings, with the aim of reducing the Carbon Dioxide (CO2) emissions of the existing building stock.

The Government is to fund a £6 million, four-year, competition that will show how innovative technologies and processes can be used to make significant energy savings in non domestic buildings such as schools, shops, and offices.

The Invest in Innovative Refurb programme will introduce new, energy efficient, technologies and processes to the refurbishment of non domestic buildings, with the aim of reducing energy use in the existing building stock.

The programme will be managed by Innovate UK (formerly the Technology Strategy Board) ( in partnership with the Department for Energy and Climate Change (DECC - The funding was made available through an SBRI competition in 2012. Building owners or occupiers, working with technology suppliers, were invited to submit proposals to introduce innovative energy efficient technologies that can achieve significant energy savings and reductions in CO2 emissions.

The funding was awarded in two tranches in Spring and Autumn 2012.

Industry Engagement Workshop

On 26 April 2012, the MBE KTN ran an industry engagement workshop with the National Refurbishment Centre.  Presentations from this workshop are now available, please click here.  Please note you must be a member of this network to view the outputs.

26 projects were awarded up to £20k each to undertake feasibility studies and to underake an evaluaiton of the existing buildings energy performance.

From these feasibiltiy submissions, 10 projects were selected to receive contracts of up to £1M to develop their solution.  The final project reports may be found under the Resources tab.  The following is the list of projects:
